Three killed as car hits tree

Three people died when a car crashed into a tree.

It happened at about midnight on a stretch of the Birmingham New Road in Lanesfield, Wolver-hampton, near its junction with Lawnswood Avenue.

All three men, believed to be local and aged in their 20s, were pronounced dead at the scene.

West Midlands Police said the accident happened when the Vauxhall Astra they were in hit a tree on the city-bound carriage-way of A4123 Birmingham New Road.

This was closed for six hours while accident investigators examined the scene and the highway was cleared.
