Three people were recovering in hospital last night after being gunned down in a city centre nightclub.

Police were called to The Edge nightclub in Lower Parliament Street, Nottingham, shortly before 4am yesterday after receiving reports that a number of people had suffered gunshot wounds.

The injured are under police guard at the city's Queen's Medical Centre where they are being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

A police spokesman said the shooting was "not a random attack" and appealed to members of the public to come forward with information.

Chief Superintendent Peter Moyes said: "We need to speak to anyone who was in the nightclub or in the subsequent area and may have seen something.

"Taxi drivers, take-away owners or customers may hold vital information.

"We also want to reassure the public that this was not a random attack. A firearm was discharged in the nightclub which means someone purposefully went out with a gun intent on using it."

The streets around the club were cordoned off as a forensic search of the area was carried out.

A police spokeswoman later said that two men and a woman sustained non-life threatening injuries in the shooting.

A search of the club was under way and the surrounding roads were likely to remain closed for some time. ..SUPL:
