A supermarket in one of Birmingham city centre’s luxury dining and shopping centres has been closed down after mice were found, it was revealed today.

The Tesco Express store in the Mailbox, in Wharfside Street, was shut down yesterday by environmental health following a visit by officials from Birmingham City Council.

A notice on the doors of the store said there was “mouse activity and food at risk of contamination”.

The store remained closed today and will do so until council officers decide whether it is allowed to reopen.

A court hearing will be take place tomorrow following a further inspection. The store could face permanent closure if officials are not satisfied that any risk remains.

A Tesco spokesman said: “We take these issues seriously and apologise to customers for the inconvenience. We have taken measures to resolve the issue.”
