Two teenage girls are recovering after being rescued from a cave close to Tutbury Castle, near Burton.
Police said the friends, both 16, were trapped for several hours because they were unable to get up a steep embankment after climbing down into the cave on Thursday night.
Police from Burton found the girls safe and well and remained with them until fire crews arrived to bring them to safety.
A police spokesman said: "Although cold and wet, neither of the girls was hurt and they were both taken home after their ordeal."
It is understood the girls used a mobile telephone to contact family members, who alerted the emergency services.
