The body of a teenager who jumped into a river after fleeing the scene of a serious assault has been recovered.
An underwater rescue team found the remains while carrying out a fingertip search of the River Trent in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire.
The teenager was named by police yesterday as 16-year-old Liam Byrd, of Edmonton Place, Winshill, Burton-on-Trent.
It is believed officers were trying to speak to Liam following a violent attack outside a kebab house in Bargates, in which a man suffered facial injuries, early on Saturday when he fled.
Chief Superintendent Keith Smy, who led the search, said the death appeared to be a "tragic accident".
Nottinghamshire Police divers discovered the body on Saturday afternoon, just 100 yards downstream from where he was last seen.
The discovery came after a search by officers and dogs as well as a helicopter crew from RAF Kinloss in Scotland.
