A Shropshire teenager has been critically injured when the mast of a boat being towed by a car smashed through the windscreen of the vehicle she was in.
The 19-year-old woman, from Bridgnorth, underwent surgery following the "freak" accident in Bewdley on Wednesday night.
West Mercia Police said the woman, a front seat passenger in a purple Rover, was struck by the mast of a boat which was on a trailer being towed in the opposite direction.
A police spokesman said the victim, who has not been named, was taken to Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham, where she remains in a critical condition.
The accident happened at about 10.40pm on the B4194 Dowles Road, Bewdley, as the boat was being towed by a black Range Rover driven by a local man.
PC Sian Davies said neither driver was injured.
"As the vehicles passed, the mast is believed to have come away and gone through the windscreen of the purple Rover, missing the driver, but striking the passenger," the officer said.
Witnesses or anyone with information should contact PC Davies on 08457 444888.
