An 18-year-old prisoner has died in hospital after being found hanging in his cell in Shropshire, the Prison Service has said.

Michael Cartwright, who was serving 20 months for assault occasioning actual bodily harm and theft, was found hanging in his cell at Stoke Heath young offenders institution in Market Drayton, on Monday evening.

He was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead on Wednesday.

A Prison Service spokesman said: "At 8.50pm on Monday December 20, Michael Cartwright was found hanging in his cell at HMYOI Stoke Heath. He was taken to outside hospital but was pronounced dead at 12.35pm on Wednesday December 22.

"As with all deaths in custody, there will be an investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time."
