Many of the world's most influential local authority planners and architects will be gathering in Birmingham tomorrow to discuss issues shaping cities of the future.

The two-day Urban Land Institute Europe conference Cinderella Cities: Tales of Modern Urban Renaissance is being held at the Repertory Theatre in Centenary Square.

Topics under discussion include the importance of tall buildings on the city skyline, the debate about city regions and elected mayors and the importance of a first class transportation infrastructure.

Speakers include HOK International director Pierre Baillargeon, former Pittsburgh Mayor Tom Murphy, Urban Splash chairman Tom Bloxham and Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment chief executive Richard Simmons.

The conference will be opened by Mike Whitby, the leader of Birmingham City Council.
