A huge hole was discovered next to a gas main in Birmingham today as reports said a suspicious package was discovered.
Police officers were deployed to the A45 in Small Heath, the main road from the city centre to Birmingham Airport and Coventry, and cordoned the area off.
There were unofficial reports that two ladders were found inside the hole, which was said to be 30ft deep and 10ft wide.
A West Midlands Police spokeswoman said the incident prompted the closure of Small Heath Highway near the Ackers Trust site in the Golden Hillock Road area.
"There's an incident police are treating as suspicious and Small Heath Highway has been closed in both directions," a police spokeswoman said.
A message on the Ackers Trust's answerphone said the centre would be closed because of an "incident".
