Students at a Birmingham school have raised more than £1,700 for the victims of the south Asia earthquake.

The money was donated by pupils from Swanshurst School, Billesley and the school hopes to increase this total by holding a non- uniform day tomorrow, with students contributing £1 to wear their own clothes.

Additionally, the school will have a two-minute silence at noon, to remember the victims and the reasons why they need to raise the money.

Headteacher Elaine Kenney said: " The response of our whole community to the tragedy that has occurred has been tremendous.

"All of our students have been magnificent in making selfless gestures to help others who are in such a desperate plight."

She said the disaster was particularly distressing for the school as a community, as many of the pupils have family living in the affected areas.

The school will donate all money raised to Islamic Relief.
