A Birmingham MP has demanded a career criminal dubbed one of Britain’s most dangerous sexual predators be sent back to jail.
Selly Oak’s Steve McCabe said John Cronin, who is also a serial conman, should also be placed on the Sex Offender Register.
The politician said he would urge Justice Secretary Chris Grayling to intervene in the 41-year-old’s case and raise a parliamentary question on the matter.
Cronin was jailed for life in 1992 for sexually assaulting a Tory activist in Scotland while dressed as a priest.
He also duped charity fundraisers out of cash by posing as the Mayor of Birmingham and stole from nuns who offered him shelter.
There are no legal restrictions on Cronin’s movements, even though police admit they expect him to re-offend. And he is not on the Sex Offenders Register because it did not exist when he was convicted of the sex attack on the Tory worker in 1992.
In his latest brush with the law, Cronin broke the terms of his prison licence by travelling to Scotland to stay with his parents in East Lothian after being released from jail in Northern Ireland on June 1.
He had been serving a year’s sentence for robbing a group of nuns who had taken him in after he was released from Birmingham Prison in 2010.
Mr McCabe said: “If a sexual predator like this is in breach of his licence then why hasn’t he been returned to jail?”
