A police force's mounted section is seeking sponsors for its horse boxes and saddlecloths.

Nottinghamshire Police Authority hopes its "highly visible" equine recruits will prove a popular proposition for businesses wishing to raise their profile.

The authority's chairman, John Clarke, said Nottinghamshire was one of only 16 forces in England and Wales to have retained a mounted section, meaning its horses are deployed all over the country to help police football matches, animal rights demonstrations and other high-profile events.

Mr Clarke said: "At approximately 17 hands high and weighing in at around half a ton, police horses are there to be noticed!

"A number of companies have said to me that they would like to put something into policing, and this is one way that they would clearly get something in return.

"A company wishing to sponsor either the whole section or - as happens in the City of London - just one horse at a time, would see considerable benefits.

"Their logo would be carried on the horses' saddlecloths and on the Nottinghamshire Police force horse boxes."
