West Midlands Police have arrested snooker player Stephen Lee following an investigation into suspicious betting patterns.

The player, from Trowbridge in Wiltshire, was arrested on Thursday.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "A 35-year-old man from Wiltshire was arrested on February 11 on suspicion of cheating.

"This follows a joint operation where West Midlands Police have assisted the Gambling Commission, following their concerns about suspicious betting patterns."

A spokesman for World Snooker, the sport's governing body, said it would assist the Gambling Commission's investigation and then hold its own inquiry.

"Neither the commission nor the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association will release information surrounding a betting matter while an investigation is ongoing," he said.
