Coventry manager Micky Adams has signed Reading striker Shaun Goater on loan until the end of the season.

The 35-year-old made 49 appearances for the Madejski Stadium club and Reading boss Steve Coppell has loaned out the Bermudan to avoid triggering a £50,000 payment to Manchester City - Goater's previous club - after his next Royals game.

Goater will link up with the Sky Blues at the club's Ryton training base later today. He is expected to play some part when Coventry travel to meet Worcester City in the Carl Heeley's testimonial game on Thursday night.

Boss Micky Adams said: "Shaun is an experienced centre-forward with a reputation for scoring goals. I'm sure he'll be a valuable addition to our side and hopefully he'll find the back of the net a few times along the way."

The move represents a change of heart for Goater, who publicly turned down the opportunity to go out on loan in January preferring to stay with the Royals and in a bid to resurrect his career with Reading.

But he has not played since December 28 and believes that his future now lies aware from the Berkshire club.

He is the second loan signing to arrive at Highfield Road this week after West Bromwich Albion's Lloyd Dyer whom Adams hopes will fire Coventry to Championship safety.

Those hopes have been dealt a potentially damaging blow with the news that goalkeeper Ian Bennett is stalling on a decision to extend his loan spell at Highfield Road.

The Birmingham City player has left the Sky Blues sweating after his initial onemonth stay expired on Saturday. Bennett is out of contract at St Andrew's in the summer and last week said that he was keen to stay on loan with the Sky Blues to keep playing games.

But he has strongly hinted that he has other options that may be more appealing including a move to promotion chasing Sheffield United.

The keeper impressed on loan at Bramall Lane in December when he stood in for Paddy Kenny whose own form has caught the attention of a number of Premiership clubs, including Aston Villa and Blues, and who are thought to be ready to step in this summer.

"I went to Coventry for a month to help them out," said Bennett, "but I have come back to Birmingham.

"With the transfer deadline this week, I want to keep my options open.

"Ideally I am looking for something permanent, whether that is at Birmingham or somewhere else."
