Three people have been taken to hospital following a six-vehicle crash which left one car underneath a van on the M6 in Wolverhampton.

The accident happened on the southbound carriageway of the M6, near junction 11a, in Great Saredon at 1pm today (Monday).

No-one was seriously injured, but four people were taken to hospital.

Three ambulances, a rapid response vehicle and an incident support officer attended. The Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford was initially sent to the scene but was stood down when land crews confirmed no one had been seriously injured.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “Crews arrived on scene to find three cars and three vans which had been involved in a collision; one car ended up underneath the back of a flat bedded van. Fortunately, all occupants were out of their vehicles and on the hard shoulder.

“A man and a woman from the car which was underneath the van, both believed to be in their 50s, suffered neck pain in the crash. Crews immobilised the couple with neck collars and spinal boards as a precaution before they were transferred by land ambulance to Walsall Manor Hospital.

“A man, believed to be in his 70s, was treated on scene and taken to New Cross Hospital by land ambulance as a precaution. A 35-year-old man sustained an elbow injury in the crash and was conveyed to Stafford Hospital for further assessment and treatment.

“Considering the number of vehicles involved it was remarkable that no one suffered more serious injuries.”
