Dear Editor, This morning I received my electoral registration form for 2011/12 with options to confirm details online or by phone.
First I tried online, which I’ve done before. The only option I could see was to download a PDF registration form for printing off and returning by post. Not what I wanted. I’ll try phoning I thought. That seemed OK when I entered the security code. There followed a series of options, finally asking me to enter 3 if I was happy. I did this only to hear a repeat of the options. When I got to “was I happy?” I pressed 3 again. Again the options were repeated.
Next step was to phone the elections office. I contacted the city council’s switch board and asked for the elections office.
I was given the options of housing, social services, environmental services. Try again. I explained to the operator I had asked for the elections office. OK, I am put through to what I thought was someone at the elections office and explained at length my problem.
“I’ll put you through to the elections office” she said. She then put me through to the elections office.
“I’ll take your details and confirm the entry is correct, we’ve been having a bit of trouble with the service”. I said I have just confirmed by phone. Wasn’t that accepted? Evidently not.
I would advise electors check that their responses to the electoral office have registered correctly or when they turn up to vote they could find themselves disenfranchised courtesy of the city council, Capita or whoever is paid a small fortune from our taxes for providing rubbish.
