A security guard has admitted strangling and beating to death a young prostitute in a city's red light district before dumping her body outside the gates of a local cemetery.
The body of Nikola Higgins, who had been strangled with a piece of wire, was found by workmen the following morning. She had been battered around the head and face and part of her larynx was fractured.
Yesterday at Stafford Crown Court, Mr Justice Treacy adjourned sentencing Alan McLaren, who admitted the murder of 23 year-old Nikola in February 2001 in Stoke-on-Trent, for psychiatric reports.
McLaren (42), of Kings Road, Irlam, Greater Manchester, also admitted the rape of another prostitute in February 1999.
The judge ordered that he should sign the Sex Offenders' Register indefinitely.
Mr Justice Treacy praised Staffordshire Police for the "painstaking work to put together a jigsaw and bring McLaren to court."
He said sentence would be passed towards the end of January.
