A schoolteacher punched and robbed a drunken man who had been for a night out in Birmingham city centre, a jury has been told.
The victim was unable to give a proper description of his attacker but Simon Evans was allegedly identified after being captured on CCTV.
Evans, 27, has denied charges of robbery and driving while disqualified.
Michael Aspinall, prosecuting at Birmingham Crown Court, said on August 14 last year Andrew Todd, an engineer, went into the city centre with some friends.
He went to the Flapper & Firkin pub and Snobs nightclub and by the early hours of the next day, on his own admission, was very drunk.
“Perhaps because of his state he decided to walk home. He was walking down the Bristol Road, out of the city and as he got near a petrol station a man, he can only describe as a white man, came and punched him and he went to the floor.”
Mr Aspinall said the robber then rifled Mr Todd’s pockets taking his keys, wallet and mobile phone.
He said police later examined CCTV footage from a number of cameras which showed the attack.
Mr Aspinall said a Vauxhall Astra was seen to pull up, two men got out and followed the victim before one of them carried out the robbery.
The car’s number plate was also captured and investigations revealed that Evans had been in possession of the vehicle at the time.
Evans was interviewed, initially as a witness, and told officers on the night in question he had been with his girlfriend at their address in Ferguson Drive, Tipton, and that he had not gone out.
Further analysis was carried out of the CCTV footage and an expert concluded that the person who robbed Mr Todd looked very similar to Evans, said Mr Aspinall.
He added that the attacker was wearing a distinctive T-shirt, with an animal motif, and that a similar kind of shirt was discovered at Evans’ address.
Mr Aspinall said that when Evans was further quizzed he declined to answer any questions.
In a statement Mr Todd said he had drunk eight pints and a few spirits and as a result of the attack suffered a cut and a swollen and bruised right eye.
The case continues.
