Disconsolate Mat Sadler expressed his pain at committing the dreadful error that marred Alex McLeish's first game at St Andrew's.

But the Birmingham City defender, who has only returned to the team for the last two games after being left out by McLeish's predecessor Steve Bruce, has vowed to bounce back even though his mistake cost his team two points.

There seemed little danger when Sadler collected the ball in the 51st minute but his back pass to Maik Taylor was short and allowed Stephen Hunt to nip in and go round the goalkeeper.

In his efforts to cover the danger Taylor dashed out and brought down Hunt, who then stroked home the resultant penalty to earn his side a draw they probably didn't deserve.

While it was Taylor who gave away the spot-kick Sadler accepted responsibility that it had been his intervention that had created the danger in the first place.

"It was just a bad back pass," Sadler admitted. "I should have just really whacked it away but it is one of those things. You have just got to hold your hands up and say it was your mistake.

"I was hoping the lads would get me out of it but it just seemed it wasn't going to be one of those days," he added in reference to the string of goal scoring chances Blues missed at the other end.

It was the second time in two weeks Sadler has been involved in a decisive moment. Last week at St James' Park he was adjudged to have brought down Obafemi Martins who also got up to convert the penalty.

Indeed Birmingham have conceded three in their last three matches as well as other costly clangers that have seen three points squandered.

Not that Sadler was in the mood to point fingers: "You can't really do anything about a mistake like I've done.

"Yes I'm back in the side, let's see if I stay in. At the moment that is not a consolation. I'm just gutted about what happened.

"I'm gutted tonight and tomorrow. What can you do. You can't live life in the past. I'll deal with it."
