Bucuresti Oaks risk European Challenge Cup carnage when they come to Sixways tomorrow to face a full strength Worcester side.
Of course for Warriors ‘full strength’ this season means an injury list in single figures and one must say nothing of the absence of two first choice wings, a brace of starting fly halves, a world class centre and the odd missing back row forward.
Add the eclectic nature of Mike Ruddock’s selection policy to the fact the players he has got have not tasted fresh blood since December 27 and it might be that the Romanians’ visit to the Midlands is perfectly timed.
However, those who remain in Ruddock’s squad are feeling something like caged lions and it seems safe to assume they will tear into this weekend’s prey with considerable zeal.
Whether that enthusiasm transfers itself into tactical cohesion and technical fluidity is doubtful and so Ruddock knows his team’s penultimate Pool Three fixture is as much about spring cleaning the cobwebs and rust away as amassing a points total near three score and ten.
“We have looked back at the action when we have been involved with Bucuresti and their battles with Bourgoin,” the director of rugby says.
“Bucuresti really muscled up against them, they were full of edge and enthusiasm and they have a couple of good players who can break the line.
“We certainly won’t underestimate them. That’s the message I have given to the boys and we will have to be very professional in what we do. There will be some rustiness in our play because we have not played for a couple of weeks. Once we overcome that our aim is to win well.”
Eoghan Hickey continues his loan from London Irish while Hal Luscombe is once again set to make his full debut.
