A woman featured in CCTV footage putting a cat in a wheelie bin in Coventry has now been traced, say police.
Police say speculation that the woman was being given police protection was "categorically not the case", although community support officers were outside the woman's address monitoring a large group of people for "public order purposes".
The RSPCA is leading an investigation into the incident and will be interviewing the woman shortly.
Police are supporting the society's investigation and, in a statement, asked the public to "leave the matter to be dealt with in the appropriate manner by the authorities".
Police say they have not arrested the woman because she has not committed a criminal offence.
The incident occured in the Stoke area of Coventry. The cat's owners posted the CCTV footage, showing a middle-aged woman stroking the cat and then dumping it in a wheelie bin, on YouTube.
