Wayne Rooney has spoken publicly for the first time about his massive gambling losses.
The Manchester United striker tells in his autobiography how he would stake up to £1,000 on racehorses, greyhounds or football, but stopped when his fiancee Coleen discovered he had lost about £50,000 over a year.
Rooney started to bet seriously again in September last year and is believed to have lost £700,000. Rooney said he would bet by sending text messages to a man he knew only as Mike, but did not realise the scale of his losses as he was never supplied with receipts or accounts.
Rooney said: "I blame myself, not the bookmaker. It was me who put on the bets. No one forced me."
