Albion's hopes of securing Kieran Richardson for another season are hanging in the balance following his stunning England debut.

The 20-year-old Manchester United star grabbed both goals in the 2-1 win against the USA on Saturday, scoring the opener with a cool free-kick after just four minutes.

And the midfielder has now hinted he is poised to sign a new Manchester United deal, which could give the Baggies a massive headache as they finalise preparations for summer squad strengthening.

Manager Bryan Robson has made no secret of his wish to take Richardson back for another year, but the player's England performance may now put him beyond Albion's reach.

"My dad is talking to Sir Alex Ferguson and I want to sign a new contract," said Richardson, who may miss tomorrow's match against Colombia after suffering a hamstring strain.

"I'm not worried about the details I just want to play for Manchester United."

Although Richardson has continually reaffirmed his desire to remain at Old Trafford, Ferguson must decide whether he deems him ready for first-team action immediately or is willing to grant him another spell on loan.

United are likely to strengthen their squad this summer, following a trophy-less campaign last season, which suggests there may still be an opportunity for Albion to take him back - especially as left-wing rival Ryan Giggs has recently signed a new deal.

Meanwhile, it is understood Albion are considering a loan move for Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Kirkland.

The highly-rated stopper, who is well-known to Albion's present and the Reds' former goalkeeping coach Joe Corrigan, has fallen down the pecking order at Anfield since the arrival of Scott Carson.

Robson tried to bring in Carson during January's transfer window and has identified the role as one of the areas he needs to strengthen - especially in the light of Russell Hoult's inconsistent form.

Kirkland, aged 23, has played 45 times during an injury-dogged four years with the Reds.

His plight has not been helped by recent reports that Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is looking to bring in a new goalkeeper.
