A man drove his lover to the countryside to talk about their relationship problems and strangled her with a piece of rope, a jury heard yesterday.
David Evans then took Jeanette Evans back home and left her covered up in his car while he telephoned for an ambulance, Stafford Crown Court was told.
Adrian Redgrave QC, prosecuting, told jurors Evans (53) was convicted in October 1997 of the murder of 40-year-old Ms Evans and jailed for life.
He said the Court of Appeal last year quashed the conviction on the grounds that Evans' mental condition had not been considered, and ordered a retrial.
Evans, of Woodside, Telford, has pleaded not guilty to murder.
Mr Redgrave said the couple were not married and problems may have arisen over access to their daughter.
The trial continues.
