PLANS for a huge controversial art billboard along the M6 in the Black Country have been shelved.

Developer Opus Land wanted to put up The Sandwell Icon structure beside the M6 in Wednesbury, claiming it could be as famous as the Angel of the North.

But police and Highways Agency officials expressed concerns over the structure distracting motorists.

Now plans for the 278ft advertising sculpture have been withdrawn following consultation with local residents.

The venture was touted as being able to rake in about £1million in advertising every year and bringing the Black Country international recognition.

And a revised proposal has now been promised.
