Operators of the M6 Toll have enjoyed some welcome respite after traffic levels increased over the summer months.

Latest data from owner Midland Expressway shows an average daily traffic figure of 39,237 in the three months to September, which represents a 3.8 per cent increase on the same period last year.

The results come after West Midlands’ transport chief called for the nationalisation of the M6 Toll, claiming its capacity is under-used.

Latest data from Midland Expressway shows 43,201 vehicles used the road on average on workdays between July and September, and an average of 30,174 used it on weekends.

The firm said the rise in average daily traffic was a result of roadworks on the competing M6 motorway.

It added: “The positive impact of the roadworks is expected to continue throughout 2013, however overall traffic performance continues to be impacted by the continuing weak economic conditions in the United Kingdom.”

Centro chief executive Geoff Inskip recently said it was “madness” that the M6 was “choc-a-bloc” every day while the toll road was hardly used.

He also attacked the finances with car drivers charged £5.50 and truckers £11 on weekdays from 6am to 11pm.
