The father of a Royal Military Policeman killed in Iraq is to stand as an MP against Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon.

Reg Keys, aged 52, will stand as an independent candidate in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, to continue his campaign for "justice" after the death of his 20-year-old son in Al Majar Al Kibar.

Lance Corporal Tom Keys, who was originally from Solihull, was one of six Red Caps killed by an Iraqi mob as they manned a small police station on June 24, 2003.

Last week the grieving families reacted angrily to the Army's decision not to discipline any staff in connection with the incident.

Mr Keys, an ex-ambulance paramedic who now lives in Bala, Wales, said he wanted to fight for accountability in the Ministry of Defence.

He said: "I'm standing for MP because I want to take the battle to Geoff Hoon's doorstep. The families are fed up of the way we are being treated.

"At the moment we have a Prime Minister who is quite happy to take time out for Ozzy Osbourne when he falls off his quad bike, but can't find the time to write to bereaved families.

"We are being governed by a pantomime horse, with George Bush at one end and Tony Blair at the other."

The 52-year-old, who is hoping to overturn the Defence Secretary's 13,268 majority in Ashfield, said he was campaigning for "transparency, justice, openness and no more lies".

He said: "When things go wrong people should be held to blame, and that hasn't happened. All we have had is cover-ups. I fully understand what I'm up against. You just have to try these things."
