Dear Editor, May 3 is D-Day, decision day. Do we want an elected Mayor or not?

I am not qualified to advise anyone on how to vote, but I can give the reasons why I shall vote no.

An elected mayor would be amenable to outside pressure groups with what little power ordinary councillors already have becoming even less.

The cabal that would be in charge of council matters could decide without debate on how the budget should be spent.

The system of an elected mayor has been largely abandoned in the USA and Spain, due mainly to corruption, bribery and nepotism.

In short, the disintegration of democracy. Retain the status quo.
