An indoor karting centre destroyed in a devastating £1 million blaze is set to rise from the ashes - but it could take 12 months to rebuild.

The fire on Sunday night wrecked The Raceway centre in Cranford Street, Smethwick, which had been doing a huge success after opening in July.

Bosses at The Raceway are confident the centre will eventually be redeveloped but in the meantime are searching for other temporary premises.

Raceway managing director Adam Batchelor said the company was anxious not to lose its customer base and would be looking to set up another karting centre as soon as possible.

"If the Cranford Street centre is redeveloped it could take months and we cannot wait for that," he said.

"When we were looking around the area and identified the Smethwick site for the centre, there were other possible venues which were earmarked so we will be pursuing those.

"It is a tragedy what has happened because business was buoyant at Cranford Street in a very short time. This was the third biggest karting centre in the country and we had spent £200,000 on the building and a further £ 150 , 000 on equipment.

"The costs for rebuilding the premises will probably be over £1 million."
