Dear Editor, How can we elect a police commissioner if we don’t know who they are, what they are, or what their manifesto is?

This is a shambolic proposed transfer of power. We need to get a grip on exactly what a police commissioner is all about – we have candidates but even they seem to have different interpretations of what their remit will be.

We need information on the candidates and on their policies, If we elect our police commissioner on party lines then this really is a recipe for chaos and meltdown of our police force. We elected councillors on party performance and, in our rush to punish the coalition government, sacked some very competent ones.

This isn’t the way to elect a police commissioner.

So if they can’t get this right we would be a much wiser electorate to tell the government that until they have a proper process in place we don’t want a police commissioner and we will carry on with what we’ve got – a chief constable and a police authority.
