Protesters angry at plans to build houses next to a Birmingham beauty spot held a demonstration in the city yesterday.

More than 40 members of residential and wildlife groups in Edgbaston met in front of Birmingham Council House, holding banners which read, "Say no to Edgbaston reservoir flats."

Corinne Bateman, a member of the Friends of Edgbaston Reservoir action group, said the peaceful protest attracted attention from passers-by.

The 66-year-old retired teacher said: "We were particularly pleased with the public reaction.

"We received more than 300 signatures from people who do not want the buildings in such a beautiful place."

Mrs Bateman said the protest was necessary after the group missed out on the chance to submit a full objection to plans to build 40 houses and 50 apartments next to the reservoir.

Last week Birmingham Civic Society claimed it was told by officials manning the council's planning hotline that the deadline for submitting objections was January 10.

But the application was heard five days earlier and was given the go-ahead by the planning committee.

Mrs Bateman said FER has now started to look at its next plan of action. "There are definite flaws in the decision process," she said.
