A tatty programme for Manchester United's first match at Old Trafford sold for £4,300 at auction yesterday.

A global boom in interest in memorabilia relating to the Premiership club ensured the rare item - dating back to February 19, 1910 - exceeded its guide price of £3,500.

The eight-page document was auctioned by Shropshire-based auctioneer Mullock Madeley at a sporting memorabilia sale at Ludlow Racecourse.

Auctioneer John Mullock said the item was sold over the telephone to a private bidder.

He said: "It is an extremely rare item, albeit a bit tatty, and bidding was pretty fast and furious."
