An NHS recruitment drive in Birmingham today aims to show the health service is not just about doctors and nurses.

Information on more than 300 careers and jobs, ranging from catering and computing to driving and dentistry, will be available at the Novotel on Broad Street.

The NHS Job Shops campaign, now in its fifth year, brings together NHS trusts with organisations including Jobcentre Plus, Connexions and Aimhigher.

Similar events are being held in Coventry, Hereford, Leamington Spa, Walsall, Warwick and Wolverhampton. All events run from 10am to 3pm.

Medical staff are needed to treat patients, but an army of workers are employed to ensure the smooth running of a hospital from the kitchens to the creche.

NHS Job Shops also enable visitors to find out about the benefits of joining the world's third largest employer, such as flexible working, and all the support and training available to help them in their career.

Steve Barnett, NHS employers director, said: "The NHS is one of the most exciting places to work in the UK. There are a wide range of opportunities for people from all backgrounds and all ages."
