The Midlands is to pave the way as the Post Office steps up its mortgage operation as part of a drive to become one of the UK’s top ten mortgage providers.
The Post Office is to place mortgage specialists in three of its larger branches across the country including those in Birmingham, Solihull and Walsall.
The organisation said it is part of a drive to grow its mortgage operation and challenge the high street banks, with the aim of ultimately becoming a top ten mortgage provider.
Post Office mortgage applications in Birmingham have increased by 52 per cent in the first half of this year compared with the same period of last year, while remortgages have increased by 73 per cent.
Up until now mortgage advice from the Post Office has only been available online or over the telephone but the new move will enable customers to benefit from face to face contact.
As well as Birmingham, Solihull and Walsall the new system is being rolled out in Luton and Norwich before going countrywide. The online and phone service will continue.
The Post Office said it will use the latest technology to offer a swift and efficient service with would-be homebuyers approved in principle within a matter of minutes.
The introduction of Mortgage Specialists follows feedback from customers who wanted the opportunity to discuss their requirements face to face before committing to such a large investment.
Mike Cook, head of Post Office mortgages, said: “We understand that taking out a mortgage is one of the most important financial decisions you have to make. Birmingham’s Pinfold Street branch is an ideal first location to start the rollout as we’ve seen a big increase in business year-on-year.
“Introducing mortgage specialists in one of our busiest branches will give our customers the assistance they require to help them through what can be a complex process.
“We are one of the fastest growing financial services providers in the UK and by introducing mortgage specialists in our branches, we are taking the next step in fulfilling our ambition to become one of the best providers in the marketplace and to be a genuine alternative to the established high street providers.”
