Police have traced the parents of a newly-born boy who was abandoned on the doorstep of a private home earlier this week.
The pair, both aged 19, may now be reunited with the child after voluntarily attending Stafford police station last night, Staffordshire Police said.
Their son, named Alfie by nurses at Stafford District Hospital, was found on a doorstep of a house in Rugeley at 12.30pm on Tuesday.
A police spokesman said: "The couple are from the Stafford area and we have no reason to doubt that they are the baby's parents. We must stress that they were not arrested.
"Police and social services will be working with the couple today to look at the next steps, which will hopefully mean them being reunited with their son."
It is understood that the couple came forward after one of their relatives saw a media appeal concerning Alfie, who is being cared for by foster parents.
Examinations carried out by paediatric staff have shown that the baby, thought to be about three weeks old, is fit and well.
