Police investigating the death of a man who was shot at a barber's shop in Birmingham on Saturday are appealing for information from football fans who were on their way to Villa Park.

Two men, aged 24 and 29, were taken to hospital after the shooting in Lozells Road, Newtown, which happened at about 2.30pm. The 29-year-old local man died on Sunday morning. The 24-year-old is in a serious but stable condition.

A police spokeswoman said the incident began when a youth ran into Poppies Salon, chased by two other youths. They were followed shortly after by a larger group of youths.

As the first youth was attacked by the chasing group, more people arrived in cars and a fight broke out between about 30 people.

She said: "At the time of the incident the traffic in Lozells Road was busy with many people travelling to Villa Park for the Aston Villa Premiership game.

"Many of these people may well have seen a large group of youths near to the junction with Wheeler Street, particularly surrounding a silver Peugeot 206 car."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room at Thornhill Road Police Station on 0845 113 5000 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
