Police have named a 16-yearold boy whose body was recovered from a fast-flowing river, following a six-hour search.

Daniel Gaunt, from Beech Street, Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, died despite several rescue attempts by two policemen who jumped into the River Trent on Sunday evening to try and save him.

Their efforts were hampered by the width of river and the fast-flowing current, Staffordshire Police said.

Daniel's body was finally recovered from a stretch of water near a sewage treatment works in the town shortly before midnight.

Officers had been alerted to the scene by an intruder alarm which had been activated at the centre. A second man, aged 20, was also rescued from the same stretch of river near Meadow Lane, Stretton, and arrested on suspicion of burglary. Police said the man, who lived locally, remained in custody where he was helping officers with their inquiries.

The two officers who tried to rescue the teenager were uninjured in the incident which has been referred to the the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
