A police investigation has been launched following the death of a 57-year-old woman at a scandal-hit NHS hospital in Staffordshire.

The patient died on October 13 at Stafford Hospital, which is the subject of an ongoing public inquiry after reports of appalling levels of care and high death rates at the site.

Staffordshire Police said a post mortem examination was inconclusive and tests were under way to establish a cause of death.

A force spokesman said: "Officers are conducting an inquiry into the death of a 57-year-old woman at Stafford Hospital.

"The woman, from Cannock, died on Thursday October 13.

"The investigation is being carried out on behalf of HM Coroner.

"A post-mortem examination has taken place but further tests are ongoing to establish the cause of death.

"Officers are liaising closely with the woman's family and staff at the hospital as part of their inquiries."

In a short statement, Manjit Obhrai, medical director at Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust, said: "The trust reported this incident to the coroner, who has asked the police to investigate.

"The police did not seize any records as the trust is co-operating fully with them.

"As the police investigation is ongoing, we are unable to comment at this time."

A trust spokeswoman said two members of hospital staff had been suspended.
