Police have been granted further time to question nine people arrested in connection with the murder of a 57-year-old man in Birmingham.

West Midlands Police have yet to name the victim, who died in hospital after suffering severe injuries to his head and body during an assault in Northfield early on Saturday.

The man is known to have died in hospital around six hours after being attacked in Wychall Road at about 1.30am.

More than 80 officers are investigating the murder, which led to the arrest of nine people, including a 22-year-old man, two men aged 19, another two males aged 18, and a 16-year-old boy.

A 19-year-old woman and two 17-year-old girls are also being quizzed by officers, who have been granted warrants of further detention allowing them to hold the suspects until Tuesday.

Detective Chief Inspector Ryan Howat, who is leading the investigation, said: "This was a serious and nasty assault which we believe involved a number of people.

"Thanks to some prompt police work by officers working in the local area, a number of arrests were made almost immediately."
