Fears for the safety of residents led police in a Worcestershire town to evacuate 100 people after a garage thought to contain gas canisters went up in flames yesterday.
Six fire engines from Redditch and Bromsgrove tackled the blaze at KAD Motor Services in Ednall Lane, Bromsgrove, behind the town's police station yesterday morning.
Working with the county and district emergency planning officers, the police cordoned off a 200 metre exclusion zone and evacuated staff from the police station and people from the nearby properties and buildings.
Chief Inspector Charlie Hill said: "Our policing services are continuing as normal and plans have been put in place following the evacuation of the police station."
A spokeswoman for Hereford and Worcester Fire Brigade said: "It is anticipated that we will be in attendance for some time and the incident will be reviewed over the next 24 hours."
