The mother of twins abandoned in a hospital car park in Birmingham may need urgent medical attention, police revealed last night.
The babies - named Holly and Joseph by midwives at Heartlands Hospital - were left in a cardboard box wrapped in a sleeping bag just hours after they were born.
A security guard discovered the infants at about 9.30am on the main car park in Bordesley Green East, Bordesley Green.
It is believed the infants had been lying in the box for about an hour before they were found.
Fay Baillie, head of midwifery at Heartlands Hospital, said the twins appeared to be bright and alert when they were found.
"They are very small but quite bright and alert and they are behaving as you would expect newborn babies to behave. They look stable and look well at the moment but it is early days yet," she said.
"The midwives have named them Holly and Joseph. Holly weighs 4lb 5oz, Joseph weighs 6lb 13oz." She added that the twins were very cold, due to being left outside for "probably over an hour" before they were brought into the hospital and put into incubators.
Medical staff who examined the placenta of the babies warned there was a chance that the mother had an infection which could require serious medical attention
Detective Chief Inspect David Wallbank, based at Stechford CID, appealed for the woman - or anyone who knows her - to come forward.
He said she would be treated with compassion if she contacted the police or hospital.
He said: "We need you to come forward. The priority is the welfare of your babies, and you need to know that they are doing fine.
"You need to get yourself to a doctor or hospital urgently to have yourself looked after.
"We have people here who can offer you the help and support you need right now."
He added: "As no one has come forward yet our fears for the woman's safety are beginning to grow so we would urge her, or anyone who knows her, to contact us as we believe she may have an infection that requires medical attention."
The twins were left in a distinctive white box decorated in children's cartoons wrapped in a royal blue Slumberlux sleeping bag. Police are still examining CCTV footage of the hospital car park.
