Two men have been arrested after shots were fired at a city centre restaurant on Friday night.

The men, aged 25 and 40, were stopped by police shortly after the incident in a crowded private room at Cafe Lazeez in the Mailbox at around 10pm. No one was injured.

Customers fled the Indian restaurant and went out on to the crowded complex of bars overlooking the canal after they heard the shots.

Chief Superintendent Malcolm Coall, from West Midlands Police, said the incident was "not random".

"The people seem to know each other and I would appeal for those people to come forward," he added.

"Birmingham is an extremely safe environment. I accept this goes in the face of that, but it was an isolated incident."

As well as shops, bars and restaurants, the Mailbox development contains 144 luxury flats, home to many wealthy and high-profile residents, including Premiership footballers.

Resident Emma Hallett said: "I'm amazed that something like that could go on here, you just don't expect to have that sort of thing.

" I was in my flat when it happened. It was quite worrying to hear about it."
