Police have issued a plea for calm and urged further witnesses to come forward in the hunt for the killer of a man in Birmingham's Aston area.

The stabbing came less than a mile from the spot of the notorious New Year shootings.

Victim Leon Francis, a 24-year-old convicted armed robber, was believed to be a prominent member of the Johnson Crew who went by the street name of 'Trickster' or 'Trix'. He was stabbed to death outside Ruskin Hall social club, in Victoria Road, Aston, shortly after 3am on Thursday.

Detectives from West Midlands Police's major investigation unit yesterday appealed for calm in the inner-city suburb and said extra officers were patrolling the beat.

The murder comes five years - almost to the day - since teenagers Letisha Shakespeare and Charlene Ellis were gunned down at a New Year's party in Birchfield Road, Aston, in a shooting between rival gangs the Johnson Crew and Burger Bar Boys.

It is also just days after a 33-year-old man was shot dead outside the King of the Road pub, in Hospital Street, in nearby Newtown, at 7.45am on December 23.

A spokeswoman for the investigation unit said: "Extra police patrols have been placed in the area so people can feel safe.

"Policing was increased following the death on Thursday of this young black man and will continue for the immediate future.

"The inquiry is going quite well and we are talking to a number of witnesses but we need to hear from more."

Extra police patrols come as tributes were left for the victim at the murder scene.

They included a poem, addressed to 'My Big Bro' which said: "Leon, you're a fallen angel, taken to bless us and we now need to learn from this and get some ambition.

"But you know we most definitely will because you left your mark in order to make a change in this evil corrupt world that we are living in." It concluded: "Leon, the Warrior King, your ways have taken their toll but love will conquer all evil."

The killing happened in the early hours of Thursday after a party attended by more than 100 people at Ruskin Hall. The victim died in hospital after the attack and a post mortem revealed he died of multiple stab injuries.

A friend, who did not want to be named, said: "Trix was killed over a row over money.

"He lived too fast and died too young and maybe him dying will send out a message to the younger up and coming gangsters that a thug's life is not for them."

Leon Francis hit the headlines in 2002 for his part in a botched armed robbery in 2001 on a Securicor van when he was jailed for eight years.
