Three goals in as many games and Kevin Phillips still does not feel as sharp as he would like.

The striker insists there is not only more to come from him before the end of the season but much more to come from his West Bromwich Albion team-mates over the next ten, crucial Coca-Cola Championship matches.

After that, who knows, because the 34-year-old striker has admitted that talks over a new contract with the club have stalled.

Injury and a loss of form have hampered Phillips in recent weeks, but after scoring twice in succession as a substitute and playing the whole game against a combative Crystal Palace side on Wednesday, he is slowly edging back to top form.

He says he is not there yet, even though his 20th goal of the season reflected the veteran goalscorer's assets at their most lethal and clinical.

Phillips said: "No, I am not back to my best. That was my first game in two-and-a-half weeks and, hopefully, I will get another start on Saturday.

"I was delighted to get 90 minutes and I felt stronger as the game went on. But for me to stay fully match fit and sharp I need to play games."

His goal against Palace was the 200th league strike of his career, which the player says he is keen to prolong in the Premier League with Albion.

Phillips added: "Getting 200 goals doesn't mean anything to me at the moment because I am so disappointed that we didn't beat Palace. It is a nice milestone to achieve but I have not been thinking about it.

"In terms of my contract, not a lot is happening at the moment, to be honest. We are at a sticking point and we have different views about how to move forward. But we know where we stand and I am sure it will get resolved.

"It is just taking a bit longer than both parties thought but, as this is probably going to be my last contract, I am not going to sign for the sake of signing. It has to be right, it's as simple as that. At the moment I am just focusing on getting West Brom promoted."

An unusually lacklustre home performance meant the points were shared at the Hawthorns on Wednesday night and Phillips dismissed the notion that Albion's lethargy was in part responsible to the FA Cup tie on Sunday.

"There was no hangover," said the striker. "Everyone is going to say that - but it's not the case.

"There has been no media hype from us over the FA Cup, we have got three weeks until the semi-final and we will think about that when it comes around - but the most important thing to me, and the club, is the league.

"Obviously everyone wants to play in the semi-final but I would swap that for promotion any day.

"The two lads going off affected us [Chris Brunt and James Morrison were both substituted due to injury], especially when James went off because he is a player who can change a game, as he showed against Sheffield Wednesday.

"Fair play to Palace, they played with the one up front and for 15 minutes after half time they dominated the game before we got back into it.

"There was some poor defending for the goal and that lack of concentration has cost us dearly. We cannot afford that at this stage of the season.

"I felt sorry for the defenders against Palace because they have been brilliant recently."

At the corresponding stage of last season -with ten league games to go - Albion were at top of the Championship table, before a poor run of form which saw them drop into the play-offs.

Tony Mowbray's side missed the opportunity to go third on Wednesday and, with 30 points still to play for, ensuring the maximum from the remaining games at the Hawthorns is a must, according to Phillips.

He said: "We have been fantastic here all year and we need to win our home games. We have four left here and six away so we need to win those four starting tomorrow [against Leicester].

"We need to find some consistency because there are goals in this team, and flair going forward. We just need to tighten up." ..SUPL:
