Home Secretary Jaqcui Smith urged Worcestershire people to “seize the opportunity” to influence how hospitals are run.
Ms Smith, Labour MP for Redditch, backed Worcestershire Acute NHS Trust’s application for the coveted Foundation Trust status after a meeting with chairman Michael O’Riordan.
The support came after it was revealed the trust secured around a third of the targeted number of members despite ploughing an estimated £300,000 into the consultation.
So far 1,300 people have signed up to become members, but Trust bosses were hoping for closer to 5,000.
Members will get the chance to vote on how cash is spent at the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch, the Worcestershire Royal Hospital and Kidderminster Minor Injuries Unit.
Anyone over 16 who lives in Worcestershire can become a member.
But after a 12-week consultation period, just 534 people returned forms expressing their interest.
