A murder inquiry was launched after an unnamed elderly woman was found dead at home, police said yesterday.
The victim, believed to be in her late 60s, was found with a severe head injury in Claypit Street, Whitchurch, Shropshire, after police were alerted just before 9pm on Monday. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
A man in his 40s was arrested half-an-hour later following a road accident on the A49 in Cheshire and is being questioned on suspicion of murder.
He was taken to Leighton Hospital in Crewe for treatment to a leg injury and transferred under arrest to Malinsgate police station in Telford.
