A ten-year-old girl was yesterday recovering from surgery after she was shot in the throat while playing in a Midland park.

An airgun pellet was lodged in Joyce Dell's neck, dangerously close to a main artery and nerves.

She was with friends in the play area off Bushbury Lane, Wolverhampton, when she was hit, apparently by another child.

Surgeons carried out surgery yesterday to remove the pellet and Joyce was on the mend after the terrifying ordeal.

Police have put out an urgent appeal for witnesses after the shocking incident which happened yesterday lunchtime.

Joyce was taken to hospital where she continues to be treated.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said officers were keen to speak to a hooded man who is believed to have been in the area at the time.

He is described as white, aged 20 to 30, wearing a black top, black trousers and black trainers.
