A police officer yesterday admitted driving two cars while he was over the drink-drive limit during what is believed to be celebrations of his promotion to the helicopter squad.

Pc Ian Fielding, from West Mercia Police, pleaded guilty to driving a Mitsubishi Shogun and a Ford Focus while beyond the alcohol limit. He entered a third guilty plea to driving without due care and attention during the hearing at Shrewsbury Magistrates Court, in Shropshire.

Fielding (44) of Ludlow Heights, Bridgnorth, Shropshire, is accused of taking a vehicle without consent, failing to stop for police and failing to report an accident, but no pleas were entered on these charges.

Peter Amis, who was chairing the magistrates, banned Fielding from getting back behind the wheel.

The case was adjourned until March 2 and Fielding was granted bail.
