A fifth person has been arrested by officers investigating a serious assault in which a policeman on uniformed patrol was critically injured.

Staffordshire Police said five males had now been detained following the attack on a 29-year-old officer near a library in Tamworth. Three males - aged 16, 18 and 24 --have been given police bail pending further inquiries.

A 15-year-old and a 30-year-old, the fifth person to be arrested, remain in police custody and are helping officers with their enquiries.

The policeman, who was taken to Sutton Coldfield's Good Hope Hospital in a critical condition, had followed a group of men who got out of a suspicious vehicle in Caledonian, Glascote on Wednesday.

He was later transferred to Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham where his condition is described as comfortable.
