A paraglider has suffered "potentially serious injuries" after a heavy landing in Shropshire.

The 44-year-old Walsall man was taken to hospital after coming down near a group of walkers close to the Wrekin viewing point.

Walkers told ambulance crews that the paraglider had "descended very quickly" from 40ft up, and landed heavily.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "The man was in a lot of pain. He was complaining of back and right leg injuries.

"He was immobilised using a neck collar and spinal board before being airlifted to the trauma centre at Selly Oak Hospital.

"The crew did want to pay tribute to those at the scene who were extremely helpful."
